Van Gogh Inspired Sunflowers

Following on from our Matisse inspired collages, students have been looking at the work of Vincent Van Gogh, in particular his sunflower paintings. We have been using the work of Van Gogh to inspire our new collage series.

Students began this project by drawing a simple sunflower outline on their page. Students were able to decide on how their composition would look. Students were then asked to create a torn paper collage using coloured paper and glue.

The results are these bright, colourful, mosaic looking collages. This was a time consuming project but well worth the effort! Well done grade 3, these look amazing!

Mister Seahorse

Students in grades 1 and 2 have been learning about collage this term. We have been reading books by Eric Carle and looking at his beautiful collages as inspiration for our very own artworks.

We read 'Mister Seahorse' and discussed the artworks in the book. Students then created their own seahorses by painting textured papers and an underwater background. Students then traced a stencil for their seahorse shape and decorated with glitter glue. Some students added coral and seaweed to their artwork.

These are currently on display in the main hallway outside the staff room. Make sure you stop by to look at our beautiful underwater scene! You may even see a mermaid or two!

Matisse Inspired Dancers

Students in grade 3 have been learning about collage this term. We have been learning that we can make a collage by using a range of materials (cut or torn paper, tissue, fabric, leaves, ribbon, string) and sticking those materials to a background.

Students were introduced to the work of Henri Matisse. Matisse was a French artist who was well known for his ‘paper cut out’ artworks. He called this technique ‘drawing with scissors’.

Students were shown many examples of Matisse’s collages. We discussed the bold colours in his work, as well as his use of organic shapes. We also discussed composition, and how the figure, or ‘dancer’ in our work can show movement and evoke different feelings depending on how the body parts are placed on the page.

Students worked very hard on these artworks and we are so proud of the results. These are currently on display in the hallway near the office, so make sure you have a look!

Painted Butterflies

Students in Prep have been learning about collage. We made these bright butterflies by creating textured papers with paint, sponges and forks. Students experimented with blending colours and making patterns in their papers. Students were then given some stencils to trace for the butterfly wings and body. We finished up by decorating our work with glitter glue and shiny bits and pieces.

Excellent work, Preps!
