As part of our Book Week celebrations, students in
the junior levels read the book ‘I’m a Dirty Dinosaur’ by Janeen Brian. This
story is about a naughty little dinosaur who loves to get dirty in the mud.
Students were each given a white piece of A3 paper
to begin this project. Students were asked to create a muddy swamp for their
background, similar to the artwork in the book. Students made their muddy
swamps by ripping pieces of brown paper and sticking it down, followed by
splashing brown watercolour paints on the page. Students were shown a technique
to make the paint look like it was dripping all over the page. Once the
backgrounds were dry, students were given a piece of printing foam with a
dinosaur stencil cut out. Students rolled brown paint on the stencil and
printed the image onto their background where desired. The results are these
adorable dirty dinosaurs playing in the mud!
