As part of their Indigenous Australia unit, students in grades three and four learned about Aboriginal dot painting. Students looked at several examples of dot paintings and discussed the colours and tones typically seen in Indigenous Australian art. We also discussed the signs and symbols seen in Indigenous artworks and the meanings behind them.
Students were each given a black piece of paper and asked to design their own abstract dot painting. Using earthy tones and cotton tips, students created their own dot patterns and original designs. Students thoroughly enjoyed this project and in particular found the process of dot painting quite relaxing. The results are fantastic!
